Martha Gausdal

“Exciting, eye-opening and fun”

Martha is an MSc Management Candidate in London. She has spent her professional career in organisational leadership and politics. She has extensive experience in dealing with educational law garnered from student organisations, regional politics in Norway and while serving as the President of the Student Union at Regent's University London. Her specialist areas are in communication and leadership and her new area of focus is sustainable development.

“A friend at Regent’s University first told me about Grow Movement. It’s a great place to gain experience whilst offering practical assistance to someone who can really benefit.”

Her entrepreneur is Emmaculate Majiga Joabe, a 20 year old who runs Landirani Enterprise in Lilongwe, Malawi. Landirani Enterprise produces and sells beaded jewellery and sandals to the general public and beaded door curtains to restaurant owners.

“It was important for me to gain greater knowledge of the business, and the challenges facing Emmaculate. The main focus was to afford her business stability. She did not have any financial records, therefore financial statements were key. For the first sessions I prepared simple cash flow statements and asked questions to get an overview of the business and the issues it faced."

"As I wasn’t familiar with Malawi or the beaded jewellery market there, I carried out extensive research. I found it helpful to speak with other entrepreneurs on ways to communicate."

"Working with Emmaculate has been rewarding and eye-opening. It’s proved extremely helpful in providing experience in working with entrepreneurs who do not have a formal understanding of business or a culture of creating long term strategies. I learned to look at things from an entirely new perspective and saw that providing some simple business solutions made a big different to Emmaculate’s business. Now Emmaculate has strong confidence and a strong belief in her business and its bright future."

"How would you describe your experience at Grow Movement in five words?

"Rewarding, exciting, challenging, eye-opening and fun"

What would you say to other volunteers thinking about joining Grow Movement?

"Many people already have the key, and all they need is to find the lock that opens up the potential to their business. As a volunteer consultant, this is what you can help with!"
